Canning on Smoothtop Question [message #80302] Di, 24 Mai 2005 19:13
Serendipity
I have just acquired a Frigidaire electronic smoothtop (Ceran Glass)
convection range. It is about 9 years old. The manual says canning
pots should not extend more than 1" beyond the surface of the element.
The large elements ar 9" meaning I could go upto 11" diamter. I have a
Mirro 22 qt pressure canner that measures 11 1/2" diameter on the flat
of the pot. Do you think the extra 1/4" extending from the surface
burner would be a problem? This website say it will
http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/mirro22qt.htm and I haven't been
able to get a hold of the company to find out for sure. The second
question is the weight. The canner weighs 16 lbs unloaded. The
daughter of the lady we got the stove from has an identical stove and
says she cans on it but I don't want to take any chances until I know
for sure. If I can't use the 22 qt pressure canner, does anyone have
any recommendations as to what pressure canner I could use? The other
two solutions I came up with was installing my old stove in the garage.
That would invove carrying hot jars outside, loading the canner,
then running it. There just isn't a way to get the garge as clean as
the kitchen and it would involve running an electrical lines for the
stove. I also thought of using one of those burners they use to cook
turkeys on. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I've done this with absolutely no problem. Of course, you still have
to carry stuff in and out. With some planning (and some waiting),
it doesn't always have to be "hot" stuff you are carrying, tho' ...
