Stage Deli Closed for Health Violations
By ANTHONY RAMIREZ
After failing a third inspection since January, the Stage Deli, home
of triple-decker sandwiches of corned beef and pastrami, was closed on
Tuesday for health code violations, city health officials said
yesterday. Violations at the delicatessen, on Seventh Avenue near 53rd
Street, included food not kept at proper temperatures, live roaches, a
malfunctioning refrigerator, and inadequate garbage storage, the
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said. When the delicatessen
passes inspection, it may reopen, officials said. The owners did not
return calls seeking comment.

Hi, Margaret,
Too bad about the deli problem in New York. They, of all cities should
have good ones. At least they, one hopes, will re-open , and be Clean!
Do you ever go to Zabar's? It takes planning to get there, if you're
on the East side, but it is worth it. My daughter lived on East 84th
St. between Park and Lex for a few years, before she married, so I am
somewhat familiar with the neighborhoods there.
I always love to read your posts.

Gevalt! Another one!
I had pretty much given up on Manhattan delis, anyway. My last
favorite one was an inconspicuous hole in the wall on 6th Avenue near
12th st. They closed almost 25 years ago. I never shared others'
enthusiasm for the 2nd Avenue.
When I want good deli, I fly to LA.
I also miss the good dairy restaurants in the rag trade area.

Personally I'd be very leery of ever returning to a place if they've
failed their third inspection...unless a place undergoes new ownership
it's a pretty good bet they'll continue their old dirty ways.

It has already reopened. I have not eaten there or bought their stuff
in many years and have no intention to do so in the future.
A branch of the Stage Deli opened in this neighborhood a few years
ago. On East 77th Street and Second Avenue, two blocks from where I
live. I shopped there only once (twice according to the old joke, the
first and the last time) and it did not take long for the restaurant
to close. Since there is no other Jewish style Deli near by, the
Stage was welcomed with great hopes and anticipation and attracted
many customers in the beginning. I suppose that others felt the same
way I did and when it closed, nobody I know mourned its demise.

I don't think any eatery should be permitted to say or even imply it is
Jewish unless it is kosher... Jewish-Style means what... nothing.

Good grief!
I took my best friend there last April for late lunch during a day trip
fromm Philly.
I had a Derek Jeter. It was dry-dry-dry-dry-dry. I had to squirt mustard
and russian dressing (alternately) on each bite. It was very overpriced,
imho.
To be shut down by the health dept. after failing THREE inspections, with
it's supposed reputation is certainly a badge of dishonor that shines on
the entrance door. Imagine the customers they've lost. The owners were
making money hand over fist. They obviously didn't care about their
customers one bit! I feel sorry for the regulars for whom dining there
was a daily tradition.
The Taj Majal hotel and casino in Atlantic City has a Stage Deli but it
was "running on empty" when we glanced in, complete with what I call a
"rotten dish towel wiped table/greasy mopped floor stink." Meanwhile
downstairs at the Hard Rock Cafe it was a 1/2 hour wait.

There are two or three mini Stage Delis in Las Vegas and they're really
just deli fast food places; nothing special. I don't recall ever seeing
a crowd at any of them. On the other hand, the Carnegie Deli that opened
up in the Mirage casino about a year ago is fantastic and its a full
service version of the original in New York.

Too bad I missed that. I had a brisket sandwich at the Stage Deli
in, I'm pretty sure, MGM. A pale imitation of a real NYC deli, indeed.

I ordered Pastrami, Corned Beef and Beef Tongue from the original
Carnegie Delicatessen last week. Their prices were competitive and
the quality of the meats was excellent. At least, that is what my
guests said, with Stan being one of them. Sue and Terry came too and
they seemed to like everything. Except for tongue, which none of them
tried. Yes, I still miss the Second Avenue Deli, but I have no
complaints about the Carnegie. The Stage, on the other hand, served
meats that were much inferior and when it opened a branch near me, it
soon closed, as most customers stopped buying their wares very quickly.

Margaret,
I remember as a kid, near the UN on 45th and 2nd Ave. there was a Greek
(?) deli that was always jammed. Most of their business was takeout. I
can still hear them shouting out orders!!!
There was a burger joint at 45th and 2nd Ave called "The Hickory Pit"
back then. I'll never forget the waitress flirting with me. I never
forgot her curves!!!

Time was when I thought the Stage Deli was a fairly decent place, but that
was many years ago, and I haven't been there in at least eight years. Still,
irregardless of food quality, I'm surprised by this. It was never my
favorite deli, and there are others far better in Manhattan.

Yup, I can attest to the Carnegie Deli's quality. I am not a pastrami
fan, but the sliced turkey and roast beef were superb. The roast beef
was the best I have ever had! In fact, I might stop by there for dinner
tomorrow because I will be only a few blocks away for a meeting!

Stanley, The freshly roasted turkey breast and the roast beef came
from Agata & Valentina. I think of them as American cold cuts, not
Jewish ones and walked over to the store to buy them, shortly before
you arrived. :o) The turkey breast and roast beef are baked all day
long and as soon as one is cut up and sold, a new one is started. If
you go for dinner at the Carnegie, get the corned beef or the brisket,
both are really good.

I agree with one poster (dry sandwiches with too much meat and no
toppings) which also applies to the Stage Deli.
I understand crowded deli/restaurant/diner service and I just bear with
it. Unlike today's CotD kinda/sorta. I was taught to only make requests
of the waitperson serving your table to avoid adding to the chaos. An
exercise in patience, admittedly.

This is a shame. It takes alot of money to keep up a restuant. You have
to have a GOOD cash flow to pay for all those unexpected expenses. I
don't really know this place, but I bet its just one of many
deli-restuants suffering business in the big apple. It is a dog eat dog
business, One week you can really be packed with customers, and then the
next, your down to just afew locals. I hope they can make it back from
being "closed-down".
