I've these two friends, see[1]--they met over the Internet, and have
become very very fond. They have *not* however met IRL. There are a
few thousand miles between.
So their schedules overlap in July--they each bought a ticket to a
city some closer to her than to him, but not real close to either one.
UNfortunately, there are complications and it now appears very likely
he won't be able to obtain his passport in time--and circs are such
that if they can't meet this July, it'll be "wait 'til next year."
AND of course the plane tickets aren't refundable. Neither of 'em can
afford to eat that kind of financial loss, but worse is how this is
affecting them. Sadness abounds.
So, I ask Good Thoughts, first toward a cutting of the Gordian Knot in
the passport deal. Failing that, at least 'good luck selling the
tickets' thoughts.
I *really* would like they two to have their long-awaited meeting this
summer.
[1] One of the friends is someone very special to me, and t'other is a
friend--and I value *all* my friends.

For an extra fee, he can get his passport in three weeks.

If your friend is willing to travel to a major city passport office he
can get it the same day (may require the waiting all day).
There are also courier services that will do it for you.

This sounds as if the government is not willing to issue a passport
without investigating something. I hope all will resolve itself in
good time for the trip.

Where is he?
In the US one can *renew* a US passport in under an hour... in NYC go
to the main Post Office in Manhattan... there are other locations
within the state where one can renew a passport while they wait...
there are many locations within the US that offer this service.
*New* US passports in the US can be accomplished within 24 hours, there
are passport expediters that will perform this service for a relatively
small fee, perhaps $50-$60.
If your friend is unable to secure his US passport within a relatively
short time then there are circumstances involved that you are not aware
of or are unwilling to share.

My husband needed a US passport quickly because of a sudden nonscheduled
business trip to France and The Netherlands. He got the appropriate
photos(and two forms of ID IIRC), went to downtown Houston, applied and then
returned the next day to pick up the passport... other than the extra
charges (company paid anyway)and some waiting, "no muss, no fuss". Our
current passports will expire in a few months so this time we will have the
time to do it via mail, but need to get new photos taken.

Be aware that it's dicey to try to travel outside the country if your
passport is within 6 months of expiration date. "Renew early and often"
seems to be the current policy.

I guess we in Hawaii are discriminated against. We recently had to
get new passports, although we had expired ones. Nothing fast was
offered us - took almost 2 months but ours were expired.
I do know of one couple though who were going from Hawaii to NZ and
had a 5 month old baby and forgot to get the baby a passport. So the
congenial airlines told the couple to go to the Embassy on Oahu, get
that baby a visa (Honolulu is the city) and they were then all allowed
to go to NZ the very next day.
Agree with Puester, renew early and often for $67 or so.

My bil had to go to China last month and found that he could
not because his passport expired within six months. In order to
get his renewal expedited, he had to show that he had a ticket
purchased to go there, I don't know why that is, but he did.

Generally a country will not issue a visa if your passport expires in 6
months or less.
They want to see the ticket to make sure you really need expedited
service. They don't ask for that if you apply for a business visa and
submit a guarantee from your business associate.

Interesting. I didn't grill him on the facts, I think he was arranging
to have something manufactured for his company, he had some kind
of agent or something over there helping him. Meaning, I don't know
if he had an actual business associate over there who could vouch
for him yet.
Thanks for the info. I find it interesting.

Most new/expired passports come to you in 4-6 weeks. Most people make
travel plans enough ahead that waiting a month isn't a big deal. My
daughter got hers in a month last summer and she even had to do an
official "name change" because I'd left it blank on her birth
certificate.

You can go directly to a passport office in certain cases. You must have an
appointment, pay an additional $60 fee and, IIRC, it is renewals only.

Denny says that it's not a US passport (in a down thread post). You can
be denied
a passport or passport renewal for being seriously delinquent in child
support pay-
ments. I believe it's if you're more than $5,000 past due. It happened
to a neighbor
of mine. He finally got it caught up and the passport came through. I
guess there
could be other reasons (tax delinquency comes to mind).

I don't know where he is, but here (the US), a citizen can call his
congressman (or woman, it really doesn't matter because this is what
staffers are for), and have the passport process expedited. Unless
there are unusual complications, there should be no problems getting
this done by July.
As for the rest of you, get your bleeping passport now. They are good
for years, cost very little, and you never know when you might want to
go somewhere.

It annoys me that they'll soon be necessary for trips to Canada. Yes,
Canada's a "foreign country"--but Americans and Canadians have been
going back and forth quite freely over that border for (afaik) as long
as the two countries have existed.

Yes, Canada, as well as Mexico and the Caribbean countries. All of you
non-passport holders who are used to jumping on a plane or cruise ship
at the last minute to the Bahamas, Virgin Islands or Cancun better take
this seriously: get a passport NOW. Even if you paid for the trip in
advance, the passport requirements will override your ability to board
if you do not have one.

You can request an expedited response - cannot recall the time frame,
but it's pretty quick.
That said, when I renewed my passport a couple of years ago, I did it
through the passport agency at the Newport Beach city hall. When I
received the passport, it had someone else's photograph in it. Very
weird. I took it into the NB city hall and showed it to them and they
were freaked out. Said they'd never seen anything like that before.
