I've had a bugger of a day, coping with the mad, the bad and the
dangerous to know, not to mention the seriously incompetent. I keep
getting phone calls from the villains, the people I want to speak to are
all unavailable. Documents missing or incomprehensible or jumbled up. Bah!
Before I exploded we went out and bought a new refrigerator. The old one
is 20 years old and has an unfixable problem with the door. We had
looked last week, but without measuring the fridge hole. The new one, a
Fisher & Paykel with top freezer, will stick out a bit, but not
seriously - fridges seem to have got about 10 centimetres deeper. We
bought it because it has sturdy fittings, very adjustable shelving and a
nice big veggie bin. This will be our third fridge in just on thirty
years, and I hope it will see us out. Well, almost.
Speaking of fridges, we're down to bottom of the fridge frittatta for
tonight. Zucchini, sweet potato and chorizo sausage. It was either that
or shepherd's pie with the remains of the roast lamb, and Derrick went
for the frittatta, possibly because he doesn't feel like mincing the lamb.

We had ours a couple of hours ago - piquillo peppers and halloumi on
the barbecue with a walnut-oil dressed rocket salad. I put the
halloumi, sliced, in a marinade of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and a
bit of jerk seasoning this morning, so it had around ten hours to work
into the cheese. Chucked toasted pine nuts and parsley over the lot,
and mopped up juices with some ciabatta. Lovely.

My daughter is making homemade pizza, part of her foray into the world
of yeast. Lord, I hope the dough rises!

She's 11 and making the transition from cooking with me to doing
everything solo. This dough is all hers, including the cleaning up
(unprompted--I must be doing something right!).
