opening kilner jars [message #59672] Fr, 01 April 2005 11:33

What is the best way of opening a Kilner Jar (the type with a clip and
rubber ring).
The vacuum seal is so tight I am having a struggle.
It was suggested to push a pin through the rubber ring but I find that
far from easy. I ruined one jar by trying to force a spike in and broke
chips off the glass.
Should one heat up the jar to provide internal pressure?

Couldn't find anything in the FAQ or even trusty Googling.

I'd be real tempted to involve the tip of a sharp knife -- working it
around the ring and the circumference of the jar. BE CAREFUL. I am not
responsible if you slice anything off or stab yourself, OK? I wouldn't
heat the jar as such, but would probably do it under hot running water
-- for some reason, that would make me feel hopeful about the process.
:-) Go figure. Does this rubber ring have a tab on it? When using
rubber rings and zinc caps years ago, you'd break the seal by tugging on
the tab -- stretching the rubber would change the size and thickness of
it, thereby breaking the seal.

Let us know what works and what it took.
